New York is a huge state in the Democratic primaries. It regularly votes for the Democratic nominee, and has a large amount of delegates to appoint in the primaries. The state is especially important in 2016, as both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have ties to it. Hillary Clinton was elected by New York to represent the state in the Senate. Bernie Sanders has been a part of the Vermont community for decades, but grew up in Brooklyn and has the accent to prove it.
Sanders has been far behind Clinton in the New York polls, but for one night you wouldn’t have known it. He held a huge rally in Washington Square Park, which was estimated to have a crowd of close to 30,000. Many celebrities came out to show their support for the candidate as well. Spike Lee, Rosario Dawson, Tim Robbins, and Graham Nash (of Crosby, Stills, and Nash) were all present. Other stars showing their public support for Sanders on the campaign trail include Michael Stipe, Susan Sarandon, and Kal Penn.
Despite the overwhelming show of public support, and the backing of many key celebrities, Sanders still trails Clinton by double digits in polls at the moment. We won’t know for sure until the votes are counted, but if Sanders does not do well in the state of his birth, it will be very difficult for him to win the nomination. For Democratic voters, all eyes will certainly be on New York.
